Frequently Asked Questions

Since 2018 (largely driven by GDPR), most registrars automatically redact personal registrant contact information from public WHOIS by default - this is standard, expected privacy protection, not a sign of anything suspicious about the domain.

RDAP is the modern, structured-data replacement for the older WHOIS protocol, offering standardized, machine-readable responses - many registries now prefer or require RDAP, though WHOIS remains widely supported as a fallback.

Registry and registrar systems can have their own propagation/sync delays for updating public WHOIS records - a very recent change may not be immediately reflected.

If the registrant has opted out of privacy redaction, an admin/technical contact email is sometimes listed - but with privacy redaction now the default for most registrars, a registrar-provided contact form is often the only available route.

Status codes like clientTransferProhibited or serverHold indicate registry/registrar-level locks or holds on the domain - clientTransferProhibited is common and simply means transfer-to-another-registrar is locked (usually intentionally, to prevent unauthorized transfers).

No - each top-level domain's registry operates its own WHOIS/RDAP server with its own data formatting and privacy policy, which is why lookups can look different for a .com versus a country-code TLD like .in or .co.uk.
